JACK SIONE Played by David Fane Jack has been mates with Vince for several years when we first meet him and he believes he owes Vince for certain favours afforded him in the past. Being a solo father (separated), he can certainly use the work that Melissa's new venture can offer. (He has two young children - pre-school to ten sort of age.) He initially starts out working there more as a favour to Vince - to keep an eye on Mel - rather than because he desperately needs the money. This means his loyalties are divided between his new employer and his old one. Being basically of Vince's world, Jack has had no experience of a woman as a boss. In fact, his experiences of women have been pretty limited all round (which might help explain why the marriage didn't work.) He has a bunch of (negative) preconceptions about a gig at Mel's club, but he goes along with it. However, Mel surprises him - unlike Vince who had an overly paternalistic attitude towards Jack, Mel is more inclined to empower him. She gives him additional responsibility, and thereby (in an example of enlightened self-interest) gives him a vested interest in the ongoing success of Man Alive. This attitude has both a professional and a personal dimension, and it disarms Jack - he's not quite sure what to make of this woman who's not a ball-breaking bitch, nor a piece of submissive tit-jiggling 'talent'. Jack's not a big talker - although he's an impressive physical presence (you get the sense he could handle trouble if any arose). His sense of humour tends to be dry. Jack is the guy that stands in for the Middle New Zealand bloke, and he will be a stark contrast to the buffed, pretty boy strippers in his look and his attitude. |
